African Aesthetics in African America:  Song-Dance-Chant

Dr. S'thembile West will discuss African retentions in contemporary African America, and how an African aesthetic [rhythm, improvisation, call and response, multiple meter, etc] looks in African America's expressions like dance, poetry, jazz, etc.  S'thembile says, "I try to keep it simple, not a whole lot of  'academese', but interactions and participation with the audience". A video tape of dance will be shown of clips of several dances like those of Alvin Ai Jones, Marlies Yearby [Black choreographer of a Broadway show].   This film shows how an "African aesthetic" looks in contemporary performance, churches, etc.

Born and raised in Harlem, New York, Dr. S’thembile West earned a Ph.D. in African American Studies at Temple University, Philadelphia, PA in 1994.  A Fulbright-Hayes award to the Southern African region in 1991 provided an opportunity for Dr. West to  explore cultural traditions of diverse African people in Botswana, Zimbabwe and Malawi.  Moreover, Dr. West has had an extensive career in print journalism with numerous articles published in the following: The Philadelphia Inquirer, Philadelphia Weekly, Attitude:  The Dancers Monthly [NY] and Jazz Spotlite News [NY].   Besides writing a biweekly column on Dance arts during her eight year residency in Philadelphia, she served on the Pennsylvania Arts Council and the Georgia Arts Council.

REFORM or Sovereignty for Black Folks

Please Join bro. Gimbu Kali, author or "Warriors or Parasites:  A Question of Confusion" as he compares and contrasts two liberation strategies:  Reform or Sovereignty on Saturday June 8, '02 at 7pm, FREE, at Afri-Ware Inc. 948 Lake St. Oak Park, 708-524-8398.

Kali's latest study adds clarity to the long debated differences in strategies for freedom for Black folks.  Kali builds on the research and experience he brings from his first book, "Warriors or Parasites..." In his first book Kali clarifies the differences between the criminal element in the Black community and warriors.  Kali says that the "gang-banging/drug-dealing/thug element" is the "invisible arm of white supremacy" and therefore should be termed a parasite instead of a "confused" warrior.  Kali continues that, "to say they are warriors is to commit an abomination to the ancestral memory of Ramses II, Queen Candaka, Shabaka, Pianki, Taharka, Hannibal Barka, Shaka Zulu, Queen Nzinga, Boukman, Dessalaines, Zumbi, David Walker, Nat Turner, Harriet  Tubman and number other freedom fighting patriots who have defended the lives and very dignity of Afrikan people for the last 6000 years!"

Bro. Gimbu Kali is a dedicated brother in the struggle for the liberation of Afrikan people. His message serves as a wake up call!  He cautions us about the casual mis-use of the word "warrior."  He challenges us to reserve the use of the word for those who struggle for liberation of Afrikan people, not for those who struggle for material gain at the expense of Afrikan people.

Kali addresses how de-educated and mis-oriented Black youth are so materially motivated that they have embraced the actions, values and politics of white racists, in exploits, assaults, violations and murders of other Black youth.  Kali views the mis-orientated and European assimilated Black youth as pawns further serving the goals of the white supremacy racists who seek to diminish the life expectancy of Black youth leading to a devastating extermination of all Afrikan people in America -- Afi Samella Abdullah, Ph.D.

Forced Into Glory - Abraham Lincoln's White Dream

"Lincoln didn't want to do it.
He did everything he could to keep from doing it.
And when he did it, he didn't do it."
-- Lerone Bennett Jr.

Renowned historian and scholar Lerone Bennett Jr. awakens us from our American-styled romanticized dream of Lincoln as the "great emancipator" by uncovering the truth behind the fantasies and myths we've been indoctrinated to believe as children.  He lifts the veil from  the generations of "poets, politicians, and long-suffering Blacks [who] have wept over its imagery and drama".   Lerone Bennett Jr., in his monumental and brilliant historic literary masterpiece, "Forced Into Glory - Abraham Lincoln's White Dream" presents a comprehensive look at why the most famous political act in American History never happened.  Join Bennett Jr. for a book signing on June 29, 2002, 7pm, FREE at Afri-Ware Inc. 948 Lake St. Oak Park, 708-524-8398.

"Forced Into Glory..." is a startling and original work that will change the way people look at themselves, Abraham Lincoln, the  Civil War, race and American History.   Bennett work is replete with references and quotes from Lincoln himself, Lincoln's contemporaries, and, gives overwhelming evidence that Lincoln was a "determined foe of equal rights and Black liberation."  Bennett describes with wit and wisdom a detailed look at  how Lincoln's signing of the Emancipation Proclamation "dissolves, like a mirage, the closer one comes to it."  It is refreshing to read history not from the standpoint of those who wish to continue slavery for as long as possible, but from the perspective, as Bennett  so eloquently states of a "conscious and lucid slave, aware of his objective interests and with enough information to evaluate himself and all others in terms of his immediate demands..."  Bennett continues that "everybody who supported these demands whatever his motives, was his friend.  Everybody who opposed them, then and now, whatever his motives, was his enemy."

Bennett highlights the numerous lessons of history by drawing parallels with modern day examples.  When he describes the interaction between Lincoln and Frederick Douglass, for instance, Bennett says, "the question of whether Lincoln treated  Douglass kindly or whether an Afrikaner treated a South African kindly or whether a Nazi treated a Jew kindly was irrelevant.  The question was not personal; it was political.  The question was not whether Lincoln smiled and refrained from telling "darky" jokes; the question was whether he was going to help free Black people and treat Black soldiers and their families the same way he treated White soldiers and their families."

If the Lincoln myths were the harmless fantasies of children at play, it would be possible to ignore them.  But when the myths of children become adult daydreams and when the daydreams are used to hide historical reality and obscure deep social problems, it becomes a social duty to confront them."-- Lerone Bennett Jr.

Lerone Bennett Jr. is the author of the classic study of African-American history, Before the Mayflower.  He has won the Patron Saints Award of the Society of Midland Authors for his biography of Martin Luther King Jr., What Manner of Man.  He has also received the Literature Award of the American Academy of Arts and Letters.  Bennett Jr. is executive editor of EBONY, the number one Black-owned magazine in the world for 55 consecutive years since its founding in 1945.  Previous positions with EBONY included senior editor and associate editor.  He began his career with Johnson Publishing Company is 1953 as an associate editor for JET magazine.  He began his journalism career in 1949 with the Atlanta Daily World.  He has been honored with many doctor of humane letters degrees.

African Seeds of Life…

Thanks to the ancestors for giving me the opportunity to introduce to you "African Seeds of Life:  Nature's Food Supplements, Digestive Aids and Melanin Restoration"

To the mighty sons and daughters of Africa, you deserve an abundance of health and continued greatness…
it is yours for the taking!

It is such an honor and a pleasure to be a part of the African community.  Uncovering the greatness of African people has been such a rewarding and humbling experience.  I have visited many wonderful places and learned a lot when deciding to embark on this cultural journey.  This book is the product of what I have learned as my diet evolved from the slave master's left-over scraps of waste meat and fried junk foods into the fulfilling, refreshing and liberating foods prepared by the creator.   This book provides melanin specific health, food and cultural lifestyle tips that are easy to apply.  Written with special attention to the unique cultural and historical needs of Africans in mind, this book also gives concise and easy to follow recommendations on:
              · Super Foods Specifically for the African Body
              · Table Salt:  Our Natural Enemy
              · Melanin Restoration
              · Special Pullout on Nutritional Seed Content
              · Demonstration of how to make seed milk,

It is my hope that this book will add value to your collection and aid the African community in regaining the health and wellness we deserve.

Mother/Father Nature's Miracle Pill is probably in your kitchen cabinet right now…waiting for you to enjoy its mineral rich and life sustaining essence into your bodies.  While others trivialize the power of seeds to "seasonings or breath fresheners", this book entails how they actually contain concentrated enzymatic antacid alkaline fuel essential to creating and maintaining a health filled African body temple.  Rosemary, celery seed, caraway seed, anise seed, cumin seed, cloves, flax seeds in their raw state are just a few of the seeds all of which brings aid to digestion, natural sodium (NOT to be confused with table salt) and energy back on contact.

Nzingha Amma Nommo is the owner of Afri-Ware Inc., a cultural resource center and book store in Oak Park, IL dedicated to exposing the richness of our great African culture.  Ten years ago she decided to reconsider the meats and dairy products she was eating and explore vegetarianism.  After discovering that our ancestors' diets consisted of mostly fruits and veggies, she decided to stick with it and has removed eczema, chronic sinus problems and other ailments from her system.  She is proud to say that she is not a medical doctor and does NOT want to play one on TV.  Instead she ascribes to and is dedicated to pursuing the wisdom of our ancient living African ancestors.

Ramona Africa Biography

My name is  Ramona Africa, I’m 47 years old and am a committed MOVE member for 21 years now.  I spent 7 years in prison as a MOVE political prisoner from 1985 through 1992; I was imprisoned after May 13, 1985 Holocaust where MOVE members, 6 adults and 5 babies were murdered, burned alive, I am the only adult to survive, along with one little boy.  I grew up in a middle class Black family in west Philadelphia and went to catholic school from first to eighth grade.  I went on to graduate from Temple University in Philadelphia where my aspiration was to become a lawyer.  I was set to got o law school in the fall of 1980 , but I encountered MOVE that spring and my whole life changed.  IT was my interest in the legal system that led me to MOVE trials and ultimately to MOVE.  During those trials I saw the blatant injustice in the courts.  I saw innocent MOVE people railroaded by judges, prosecutors and so-called defense attorneys.  I also saw MOVE people fearlessly and expertly confront the criminal bias of court officials using the wisdom of JOHN AFRICA, MOVE’S loved Founder, a wise and righteous Black man.  I personally talked to comitted MOVE members and was genuinely impressed with their wisdom, righteousness and unwavering commitment to fighting injustice.  I ended up in MOVE instead of in law school because fighting injustice was more appealing to me than being a part of it.  I’ve been in MOVE 21 years now and spent 7 of those 21 years in prison, not because I’m a criminal, but rather because I’m a committed MOVE member and because I survived the murderous police attack on me and my family in 1985.  I served my entire 7 year sentence, without being paroled because I, like several other MOVE family members, refused to comply with a “special condition of parole” that I have no contact at all with any MOVE member, whether they have a police record or not.  We were being told to denounce our Religion and our family:  We all refused to do that, so we were forced to serve our entire sentence.  Since my release from prison in 1992, I have traveled far and wide, talking to people about MOVE, our Belief, MOVE political prisoners and about JOHN AFRICA.

Black Athletes and Entertainers:

A Missing link to a Movement!

In 1991,  Craig Hodges,  one of the National Basketball Association (NBA) champion Chicago Bulls  visited George Bush.   Reminiscent of the 1968 black fist salute at the Olympics by John Carlos and Tommie Smith, Hodges -- the three-point  sharp shooter for three consecutive years decided to wear a dashiki and deliver a letter to Bush discussing the lack of African Americans in management positions in professional sports. Please join Hodges for an inside view of "Black Athletes and Entertainers:  A Missing Link to a Movement!" Saturday, May 3, Afri-Ware Inc. 948 Lake St., Oak Park, IL 708-524-8398 .  The event is free and open to the public.

Even though Hodges was quite an accomplished player, his historical and powerful cultural statement in 1991 led to his career taking a mysterious turn.   From 1990-1992, Hodges finished as winner of the 3-point NBA shooter contest.  Only eight players are selected to participate in the contest per year because they have the top 3-point shooting percentage.  His third year as top shooter, the Bulls won their second consecutive championship.  In spite of this impressive resume, the Bulls declined to offer Hodges a new contract.  After being released by the Bulls, not one other NBA team ever hired him.  In 1997, Hodges filed a lawsuit with the EEOC against the NBA for this unfair treatment and "stonewalling" from work.  Unfortunately the lawsuit was thrown out due to a statue of limitations on filing.

Today Hodges trains youth and adults ages 4 and up in camps and clinics in the South Suburban Park Districts of Mateson, Richton Park and Park Forest, IL.  Hodges says, "it's important now for us to treat each other right and keep a dialog open to focus on our mission.  We must truly accept the responsibility we have to our ancestors and the historical legacy we have as a people.  I just want to be a part of accomplishing this mission."  Join us in welcoming Hodges and feel free to bring your questions to be addressed at the end of the presentation.

Malik and the Magnificent Glowing Light

Join Dr. Vincent Johnson as he reads from his inspirational children's book, "Malik and the Magnificent Glowing Light", Thursday, May 8, Afri-Ware, 7pm, FREE.

Vincent Johnson, M.D. is a pediatrician as well as the author of the children's book Malik and the Magnificent Glowing Light. He finds that both roles complement each other.  Dr. Johnson says "As a pediatrician I am sensitive to how children interact with the world around them. As an author I like to creatively blend realism into my stories. The fun, creative aspects of being an author help me in my work as pediatrician.  I enjoy assessing a child's developmental progress. It's exciting to know when a child should be able to hold a book, turn pages in that book and even say the word "book".

Dr. Johnson uses his book Malik and the Magnificent Glowing Light to interest children in reading. He enjoys reading the story to children at bookstores, churches and elementary schools.  Because of his avid interest in child literacy, he conducts workshops and seminars on the subject for parents and children. Through these presentations, he empowers parents to help their children attain and improve literacy. His classroom presentations captivate students. In one presentation, he explains how a book goes from idea to publication. He illustrates this fascinating process with his children's book as a hands-on example.
Dr. Johnson is presently creating a children's book series with Malik as the main character. He also enjoys writing his own poetry and reading it at open mic events. Most recently he has become a storyteller.

The Splintering of Global Africa:  Capitalism's War Against Pan-Africanism

Join Mark Fancher for a book signing on Sunday, May 25, 3pm, Afri-Ware, FREE.

"In every country, multi-national corporations are at the root of the oppression of people of African ancestry.  One of the greatest threats to corporate world domination is an inevitable effort by people of African descent everywhere to seize economic as well as political control of every ssquare inch of the African continent.  This will be a crippling blow to capitalism because that system depends heavily on the exploitation of Africa's abundant natural and human resources.

Although many Africans are clueless about the threat that they pose to hegemony, the corporate world has long pursued a strategy designed to discourage Pan-African cooperation and organization.  This book lays bare the specific schemes that have been developed to create division and suspicion within the African World, and suggests strategies for effective resistance."

Mark P. Fancher is a writer, lawyer and activist who has dedicated his life to the pursuit of liberation and self-determination for all oppressed people.  Daily, he stands up for workers and the poor in courtrooms on street corners, and in the pages of his books and essays.

From the pyramids to the internet, Africans around the world have played a leading role in developing technology. Mathematics proficiency is the critical element needed in these technological innovations. While reading has been an ongoing major focus in the schools, not as much attention is being placed on Math. Additionally, the resources and budget allocated for succeeding in Math are being cut from an already insufficient state. Educators, parents, and students are all encouraged to come and exchange information in this forum in the interest of creating/maintaining a successful Mathematics educational environment. This Math Summit will:

  1. Highlight our legacy of Great African Thinkers and Mathematicians

  2. Describe the expectations and impacts on our students in Math as social programs such as "No Child Left Behind" are rolled out.

  3. Discuss the need for the African/African-American community to examine the critical role we play in the success of the student

  4. Discuss specific tools, creative learning techniques and resources available in the community

Memories & Images - Selected Poems Please join Useni Perkins, well respected and gifted poet, playwright, social service practitioner, administrator, and, inducted into the National Literary Hall of Fame for Writers of African Descent in 2000 for a book signing of his latest work, "Memories and Images - Selected Poems. The book signing is September 27, 7:00pm at Afri-Ware Inc. 948 Lake St. Oak Park, IL 708-524-8398, free. Perkins' book is a treasure chest of thought provoking and culturally honorable poems that leap out at us with such dignified, responsible grass-roots unique expressions. Perkins addresses the "Blues of LeadBelly", "Artistry of Miles Davis" and "In Memory of DuBois" with a creative dexterity. He poetically takes us down the social aisles with his "A Poem for Jazz Lovers and People who Hate Wars" with: "Blow the minds of neo colonial imperialists with a side from one of BUDDY BOLDEN'S excursions in rhythm. Let the NEW ORLEANS BRASS BAND play dirges for the pentagon's war lords. Change the national anthem into a blues sermon accompanied with a solo by FATS NARVARO. And let BESSIE SMITH moan over the silent grave of the unknown soldier. Place jazz organs in all churches so the people can pray to real soul. Build monuments for the DELTA BLUES SINGERS and a tomb for JELLY ROLL MORTON that will ring chimes of joy during phoney peace treaty talks Replace midnight bombing raids with jam sessions that will wail until the ruins of war torn cities have been rebult with humane housing..." He praises our great ancestors like Malcolm X, Fred Hampton and gives us a big healing cultural hug at the end of his "Black is Beautiful" with: "Be proud of your blackness For it is beautiful Cherish it with pride And if someday you must defend it with your life." Come on out and join us in praising our distinguished elder Perkins for his great works!
